2-11-20 sturgeon spearing-opening weekend

Participation in the opening weekend of the sturgeon spearing season was down almost half compared to last year on the Lake Winnebago system.  DNR fisheries biologist Ryan Koenigs tells WFDL news the number of shanties were down 47 percent compared to last year.  He says most of the shanties were located close to shore in more protected areas.  Forty four fish were harvested opening day and 30 on Sunday.  Koenigs says the fewer number of spearers didn’t prevent the harvest of some big  fish..  Three fish were registered in the upper 130, low 140 pound class.
