2-10-20 sturgeon spearing season

The sturgeon spearing season opened this weekend on the Lake Winnebago system with the DNR, local fishing clubs and area law enforcement  warning sturgeon spearers to be extra careful on the ice.  DNR fisheries biologist Ryan Koenigs describes the ice conditions on the lake as variable.  “Use caution.  No ice is ever 100 percent safe,”  Koenigs told WFDL news.  “This year really do your homework and contact your local fishing clubs.  A lot of the groups checking ice conditions post that information on their social media profiles.”   Koenig says second hand reports have water clarity at between 7-10 feet, indicating the season will probably go the full 16 days.
