A man who exchanged exchanged gunfire with police leading to his death and that of a firefighter was released from the Fond du lac County Jail earlier this month after his bond was lowered. Ruben Houston, of Wausau, had been the subject of a medical call to a bus near downtown Appleton on Wednesday afternoon. Police say Houston was treated, but after he walked away from the bus, the incident escalated and shots were fired. A review of court records by WFDL news shows that Houston was facing drug charges in Fond du Lac County. Bail was initially set at $5000 cash, but on May 3 Judge Gary Sharpe agreed to lower bond to $500 cash with conditions that Houston not possess any controlled substances without a valid prescription and have no possession of drug paraphernalia. On May 4 Houston was able to post the $500 cash.
