4-22-19 earth day

The executive director of the Wisconsin Conservation Voters says while a lot of progress has been made since the first Earth Day the environmental  threats facing the world today are greater than ever.  Monday is Earth Day, founded by former Wisconsin U.S. senator Gaylord Nelson.  “My overall thought is that we have a lot of work to do,”  Schumann told WFDL news.  “When Earth Day was founded the things we were worried about, we’ve tackled a lot of those things.  There were rivers starting on fire back then.  Unfortunately climate change has created a much bigger threat, a global threat.”   Meanwhile, Schumann says Democratic governor Tony Evers has already laid the groundwork for protecting Wisconsin’s air, land, water and health during his first 100 days in office.  In his first State of the State address, Governor Evers proclaimed 2019 the Year of Clean Drinking Water.  “The thing that is really striking to me is that he (governor) really came out strong on safe drinking water and clean energy.”   Schumann says the governor is also restoring science to the state DNR,  proposing the creation of a Bureau of DNR Science, with five full time staff positions and a director that reports to the DNR secretary.
