A Fond du Lac funeral home director has died after his ATV broke through thin ice on Lake Winnebago. The Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office says 55 year old Peter Zacherl was in a group of three other people on the lake west of the Fond du Lac River about 9:30pm Monday when his ATV went into the water. A second ATV operated by Zacherl’s 23 year old son, Daniel Zacherl, with a 22 year old female passenger, Sabrina Butler also went into the water. Daniel Zacherl stayed in the water attempted to get his father out until emergency responders were able to get him. A UTV operated by a 69 year old Fond du lac man, Maurice Plummer, stopped in time and did not go into the water. Peter Zacherl transported to St. Agnes Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Zacherl was the owner of Zacherl Funeral Home in Fond du Lac.
