8-16-17 documents show wi doc wardens were not truthful with ohio dnr

A review of the records shows that two Wisconsin Department of Corrections employees suspended for poaching walleye on Lake Erie were not truthful when initially questioned by the Ohio DNR.  Documents obtained through an open records request show that Columbia prison warden Mike Dittman and Green Bay Correctional deputy warden Steve Schueler initially lied when they were contacted May 23rd by a DNR warden who was conducting surveillance.  According to the DNR  investigatory case report obtained by WFDL news Schueller initially told the warden they caught 11 walleye,  but stated they caught seven in the morning when the warden said they were observed fishing earlier in the day.  The document says Dittman initially denied going out fishing in the morning.   According to the report the men eventually admitted they caught their full limit (18 fish) in the morning and 11 extra fish on their second trip.  Dittman, Schueler and four retired former wardens and a sergeant were cited for multiple trips…catching the limit, leaving and catching more fish later in the day.  They were all fined and lost their fishing privileges for a year in Ohio and Wisconsin.  A ten day jail sentence was imposed and stayed.  Following an internal investigation Dittman and Schueler were suspended for three days without pay for violating department standards of employee conduct.
