5-3-17 cheese named wisconsin’s official dairy product

The Wisconsin legislature has given final approval to making cheese the official state dairy product.  It previously passed the Assembly and the Senate voted in favor of it Tuesday.  Director of the Wisconsin Cheesemakers Association, John Umhoefer, says Wisconsin produces the most cheese in the country.  “I think it ratifies something thats known out there.  I think you get more mileage out of this than when you see one person wearing a cheese hat at the Packer game on national television,”  Umhoefer told AM 1170 WFDL’s Between the Lines program.  Milk has been the state’s official beverage since 1987 and the dairy cow its domestic animal since 1971.
